Hopkins pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder last week in an unannounced hearing more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) from where the shootings took place. He kept shooting as more officers rushed to the scene to save their comrades, investigators said. Rescuers had to wait for an armored vehicle so they could get close enough to try to save the wounded officers. Hopkins', 33-year-old Seth Hopkins, pleaded guilty in 2019 to second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor and is serving 20 years in prison. Reporters were not told of the hearing where Hopkins pleaded guilty, although the families of the victims and the police agencies were notified.

At a hearing at Erie County Court, Payton Gendron, 19, pleaded guilty to multiple counts related to the shooting, which also left three people wounded. In June, he initially pleaded not guilty after a grand jury returned an indictment. Gendron, from Conklin, New York, was initially charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder and 10 counts of second-degree murder, all of them as hate crimes.

The white man suspected of killing 10 Black people in a racist mass shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, in May will enter a guilty plea to a 25-count state indictment, an attorney representing victims' families said Thursday. "It avoids a lengthy trial that they believe would be very difficult for the families," said attorney Terrence Connors of the plea. As for the victims’ families reactions to the expected guilty plea, Connors said: “From their standpoint, the shooter is really someone who is largely irrelevant to their lives." The families, he said, have spent the months since the shooting advocating for legislative changes and economic development in Buffalo.

The attorney, Terrence Connors, said the defendant, Peyton Gendron, would enter a guilty plea on Monday to all 25 counts against him in a state indictment at a 2 p.m. hearing in Erie County Court in Buffalo. He initially pleaded not guilty to all counts in June. The guilty plea would mean that the case against Gendron, who is from Conklin, New York, will not go to trial. He could face life in prison or the death penalty on the state charges. Gendron also faces 27 federal hate crime and firearms charges, to which he pleaded not guilty to in January.

Over recent years, NATO allies and Russia have scaled up military exercises in the region; Chinese and Russian warships conducted a joint exercise in the Bering Sea in September. Four Arctic experts say it would take the West at least 10 years to catch up with Russia's military in the region, if it chose to do so. "NATO is increasing its presence in the Arctic with more modern capabilities," NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg told Reuters. Now NATO and Arctic allies are changing their stance. Sweden and Finland have begun investing in surveillance and deterrence capabilities and military hardware including jets so their air forces can fight alongside Arctic NATO allies.
